Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE)

The Diploma in Primary Teacher Education at Tarbaj Teachers’ Training College is a three-year competency-based programme designed to develop professionally qualified and ethically grounded primary school teachers. The training equips trainees with pedagogical skills, subject content mastery, instructional strategies, and values that align with the requirements of the Kenyan Basic Education Curriculum and national teacher standards.

About the Programme

The DPTE programme is offered under the Ministry of Education (MoE) and assessed by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). Trainees undertake coursework, micro-teaching, continuous assessment, teaching practicum and final national examinations before graduation. The curriculum emphasizes competency-based training, reflective teaching practice, professional conduct and readiness for classroom deployment upon successful completion.

Admission into this programme is strictly through KUCCPS placement.

Career Opportunities

Graduants of the DPTE programme may serve as professional primary school teachers in public or private institutions upon registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). In addition to classroom teaching, there are opportunities in community-based learning programs, non-governmental organizations involved in education, remedial and private tutoring services, as well as progression to higher qualifications in education, such as a Bachelor of Education or specialized pedagogical training.
The qualification also provides a foundation for leadership roles within the education sector and further professional development in curriculum support, education management, and inclusive education practice.
